My E3 Highlights

Like many gamers I have spent the past couple of days sitting with baited breath in front of the pc, waiting to be wowed.

Microsofts offerings were for me pretty disappointing, I honestly expected more perhaps even a big confirmation at the end that a new console was at the very least in development. Alas it was not to be, even the games they did show were pretty run of the mill and generic. Microsoft playing it safe perhaps? Perhaps a later announcement.

Ubisoft’s session was for me one of the highlights of the year showcasing some awesome new games. Watch Dogs was stunning! It reminded me of an Assassin’s Creed Matrixy style game where your digital footprint is everything. You can see for yourself in the Featured Videos section on the right.

Nice to see some more Assassin’s Creed 3 gameplay aswell looking as fluid as we’ve come to expect from the series. As a side note it was also pleasant to see the naval warfare and the PS Vita side game showcased in the Sony Session.

The short Avengers: Battle for earth trailer was pretty generic for the genre. It was nice to see Rayman Legends demonstrated on the WiiU. Then came the quite grisly trailer for ZombiU which looked amazing.

The Sony Session was a feast of video walls and pounding music but left me feeling a little underwhelmed, I expected Sony to concentrate on the PsVita much more than it did, It was nice to see the small variety of titles and cross game connectivity demonstrated with Playstation All Stars:Battle Royale though.

As mentioned before Assassin’s Creed is coming to Vita in the form of Assassin’s Creed III: Liberation. This is an exclusive side story for the Vita providing some cross-platform connectivity with the PS3. After announcing the game we were told about the crystal white Vita bundle which looks great and comes with the game and a 4gb mem card… Niiiice!

Staying with Vita Call of Duty Black Ops Declassified was announced but nothing shown and Several features concerning Vita cross play, cross-platform saves and cross controller dlc were detailed. This will allow you to use the vita as a ps3 controller in some titles, and make LBP levels on the Vita for PS3.

Theres a new piece of ‘hardware’ in town, in the shape of the Wonder Book, a physical book that uses augmented reality to bring worlds of gaming and education to life in front of your peepers. The demo for this was Book of Spells, a magical journey into the world of Harry Potter and Hogwarts developed in conjunction with J K Rowling. exclusively penned by J.K. for the game, it uses the PSEye peripheral to bring the book to life and the PSMove as your wand to cast the spells you learn as you progress through the levels. It’s a somewhat novel idea and should sell millions.

Sony also announced Playstation Suite was being rebranded as Playstation Mobile, The platform will allow developers to licence and develop Sony PS games for PlayStation-certified devices and Android platforms. So you will be able to play PlayStation games on handsets other than those manufactured by Sony. HTC has already signed up as a partner.

A great new selection of content for PS Plus members was detailed including an Instant Game Collection of 10 games to choose from ready to download and play as part of the updated PlayStation Plus subscription, with at least three being updated monthly. The launch line-up includes Virtua Fighter 5: Final Showdown, as well as Oddworld: Stranger’s Wrath HD, Renegade Ops, Chime Super Deluxe, Outland, Darksiders and Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine. along with other deals its a great move for gamers.
